Blogging with your iPhone

Technology has come over in leaps and bounds. It’s amazing how fast technology develops. Working in the technology field can be lonesome. Especially if you’re training to become a web designer, programmer or anything that requires you to work on a computer alone.

In the terms of blogging, you’ll notice that you have to work very hard to develop your online presence. If you’re not careful developing a blog can take over your life. Leaving you feel drained and mentally burnt out. I’m a living example of this.

Let’s go back in time to 2008, I was working in 40 hours a week for an employer where I wasn’t really happy and I choose to develop a blog to try and open some new doors. At the time, I started blogging on my primary website atmmultimedia.com. This was purely my introduction to SEO and online marketing. I knew when I first started learning SEO that is would a valuable skill to have at the time and still is now. I knew it would be something I wanted to do, but I never knew a few years later I’d get a job in eMarketing.

Writing and developing a blog takes time, determination and a huge amount of effort.

Since late 2007, I started blogging and spending more time on my backside in front of a computer. I become a workaholic and at times this is required to stay ahead in the online marketing and web design arena.

The more time I spent in front of a computer I became fatter, less healthier and more importantly I wasn’t happy. Although having a blog was great, I was suffering from burnout. I decided that I needed a break from blogging. You can only do so much in a day.

I lost momentum on the blogging treadmill. Blogging can be rewarding and even more so when you have an audience.

Blogging was something I did off my own back to enhance my own professional development. I’m glad I did because I learnt so much. In my early years of blogging, I was burnt out quite frequently.

In 2009, I purchased my first iPhone. Over the past few years the iPhone has become my own little computer. I love the idea of being free from a laptop or desktop. Blogging is something that I enjoy, but I don’t like being in the house on warm sunny weekends. I spend most of my working days in front of a computer in a stuffy office.

Being healthy is important. I can go on a 30 mile bike ride and I’ll in the middle of nowhere, then I’ll decide to write an article using the WordPress plugin on the iPhone.

The technology world is changing. People want freedom and flexibility. In the warm summer months people want to be outside. Unfortunately this is time where blogs become neglected. If you’re serious about blogging I suggest you use a variety of blogging technologies.

As the summer months are around the corner, how do you plan to keep your blog running?

Blogging Tips From 2010

Blogging Tips To Help Bloggers

As 2011, is not far away I wanted to share some relevant blogging articles with you. Over the festive season, do not worry if you leave your blog until January. It is a blessing in disguise. We all need a break from time to time. In life we all need balance. You can’t work on a blog constantly, otherwise you’ll become burnt out.

You don’t have to answer all your comments on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. People will understand.

Useful Blogging Tips

I hope you have a wonderful festive period and take a break from blogging.

Blogging is not Passive Income

Perhaps the reason you wanted to start blogging is to develop a passive income stream.  It sounds amazing, where you can earn money whilst you’re not working.  Passive income does exist in a variety of formats. In this article, I am going to clear the confusion surrounding passive income.

What is passive income?

Passive income is where you earn money in which you’re not actively involved in. Some examples of passive income include:

  1. Royalties from music
  2. Real Estate
  3. Stocks, bonds and shares
  4. Selling information products

Writing blog content is not a passive income stream. Running a blog is a full time job. It’s constantly ongoing and constantly needs redevelopment. You may earn commissions from affiliate links, but that’s not passive income. In developing a blog, you always working on developing information to gain you more traffic, more hits and more recognition.

Developing a successful blog is like a treadmill. If you stop running on the treadmill you will fall off and it is difficult to regain momentum. Blogging can easily become a full time job if you’re not careful. When you’re working on your blog, I’ll guarantee that you’ll work mostly for free until you get yourself established.

When you’re not creating content, you’ll be searching for new ideas and looking to take your online presence to the next level. Many hours of blogging will go unnoticed and unappreciated in the beginning. Only until you get noticed you’re online presence has a chance of making money.

Information products, computer software, DVDs or all examples of passive income streams

When developing a blog you need to have a product in mind to sell. You should create your own product. Look at Microsoft their wealth is generated from developing new versions of Windows. A vast majority of computers use Windows. The wealth is from creating millions of copies from that one master copy. It’s all about leverage.

People think that the blog is the passive income stream, it’s the information product that is passive. A blog is only a platform or vehicle. A blog is where you’re constantly writing information to attract readers or potential customers. The information product is the passive income stream. You only need to write the eBook or video course once and then you can sell the product multiple times over.

To summarise, blogging is a communication and marketing tool. Perhaps, you’ll make some money through advertising, however, you’re constantly updating you’re blog, which is active work.

Why did you give your eBook away for free?

Recently I launched an eBook for free called “The Mindset For Success Blogging” and people have been asking me: “James, why did you launch your eBook for free?”

Well, I had a variety of reasons for creating a completely free eBook. This book had taken about 40 hours to develop from concept to creation.  Creating an eBook can be a daunting task. A majority of bloggers struggle to create articles ranging over the 1000 word mark.  Once you’ve created one eBook the process becomes more streamline.

A friend of mine suggested that the best way to create an eBook is to create the cover first. As a graphic designer, I enjoy creating visuals first and yes it does help to keep you motivated. A majority of eBooks I’ve read are boring. It’s not necessarily the content that bores me. It’s the layout.

You can easily develop a creative eBook in Microsoft Word. Consider creating a landscape eBook and break down your content to one idea or concept per page. Design is just as important as the content.

Reasons to write an eBook

Creditability

For a new website or blog, it’s important to build creditability. There are millions of websites and blogs online, the problem is many web owners and bloggers expect traffic for no work. It rarely works. I understand that if I was going to make a name for myself, I needed to make my skills and expertise known to the people that matter.

Developing a free useful resource builds rapport and creditability. Focus on solving problems and developing information that helps others.

Link building

Creating a free useful resource attracts links. We all enjoy a decent freebie, right?  Look at some of the most popular sites online such as: Yahoo and MSN, they are popular for giving away free services. MSN and Yahoo are infamous for providing free email accounts, along with the latest news, discounts and offers.

If you create something worth linking to chances are you‘ll receive some back links. It’s important to develop free: services, products, offers and information to gain links. Do you get really annoyed when someone emails you from an SEO company for a link exchange? To me, it’s a time waster. I’ll never link to a site that’s crap, because it shows I don’t care about my target audience.

If you want to gain links you must do the work. Develop something amazing and then tell others about it. Web masters and bloggers will only link to resourceful and content that interests them.

An article that’s taken 10 or more hours to write, will be well researched and developed plus more likely gaining strong back links. Focus on quality. There’s a lot of content that is rehashed, reworded and regurgitated. I like to write information that serves a purpose.

A great sense of achievement

As mentioned before, writing an eBook is no easy task.  Once you’ve done something that’s difficult you’ll be surprised how easy it’ll be the second time. If you’re planning to develop a blog to money, that’s what we’re all here for, right?  You’ll need to develop at least one eBook in your online career.

Blogging is tough. Writing an eBook is a huge mountain for many. However, the benefits are worth it.

Suppose This Happened To Your Email Inbox

Are you fed up with receiving hundreds of emails weekly for products and services that are irrelevant? Are you sick and tired of receiving email scams that request your credit card details? If you’re a blogger or a website owner you may have been a victim of countless unsolicited emails.

In this article, I’ll give you some tips on how to avoid being constantly bombarded by spammers.

We all get email spam

Billions of spam emails are sent hourly and with more fraudulent emails created, sadly many innocent people are falling for these terrible traps. More recently, there are examples of scam e-mails where, fake e-mails pretend to be from banks and ask for your bank details. To any illiterate computer users these e-mails look genuine; however, your bank will never ever ask for your details.

I despise e-mail spammers just as much as you. Some of the spam e-mails you receive will provide sickening stories that could even make the coldest heart weep. Examples include: a man or woman has had a terrible life and got millions of dollars to share with you, in exchange for your personal details.

Do you get sick of cold callers trying to sell you any of the following:  a mortgage, car insurance, life insurance, credit card insurance, a loan or even mobile phone packages? It’s annoying, isn’t it?

Seriously, if you wanted to buy something you go and buy it. You wouldn’t wait for some cold calling individual to force-feed products you don’t want, right? The same applies to spam e-mails.

Bloggers have you make this fatal mistake?

Do you have your e-mail address accessible on your blog? Is your e-mail address accessible via a link? If so, take this down immediately. There is e-mail spam software available that searches websites and blogs for e-mail addresses.

The more popular your blog, the more likely you’ll receive spam. Protect your e-mail address. Never place your e-mail address on a webpage or blog, because your e-mail address will be targeted. Once it’s targeted your email address, it’ll be very difficult to prevent this issue.

Protect yourself from spam emails

The easiest way to protect your blog from e-mail spam is to use a contact form plug-in. WordPress has a variety of contact form plug-ins to choose from. I seriously recommend you have a contact form, because your e-mail address will be more difficult to obtain. For the users of your blog, a contact form masks the blog owner’s e-mail address, plus it saves the sender time from opening their e-mail program. Here are 18 Useful WordPress Contact Form Plugins to choose from. All these plugins provide various support, but if you want an email form to be installed with minimum configuration, I suggest using the Fast Secure Contact Form. This WordPress plugin provides an easy to read CAPTCHA code that stops spammers in their tracks.

What is a CAPTCHA Code?

capthca-codeThe CAPTCHA code is a box of text that’s located at the bottom of email contact form. This CAPTCHA code is an indicator if the contact form has been inputted by a human or a computer. Computers cannot read images, however, a human can.

The sad thing is the more popular your blog or website becomes the more spam and fraudulent e-mails your likely to receive. I advise you to withhold your e-mail addresses from the public. If somebody wanted to contact you they’ll fill in the contact form and continue with the relevant process.

Your turn

Have you had any terrible experiences about spamming? Do you have your e-mail address located on your blog? If so take it down immediately, so that the Google search engines can revisit your site and update their own records of your site.

How to create an abundance of new ideas for your blog

I’m just like everyone else. We all have off days, right? Let me tell you a story. It’s a warm sunny afternoon in early September. I’ve been working hard on my blog and suddenly I meet my nemesis Mr. Creative Block. He’s Always there when I’m determined to continue with my writing. Mr. Creative Block insists that I must take a break from my blog. He believes that working several hours straight is not healthy. He’s right! I am pleased that Mr. Blogging Burnout isn’t around.

Take a break from blogging

I took advantage of the opportunity to go cycling. Always prepared, not only I was wearing a crash helmet, but I brought some creative tools including: a notepad; coloured pens and a digital camera.

Procrastination causes problems

At first, I was reluctant to go on my mountain bike. Temptation to give up was so appealing. After the first mile I began to feel more relaxed and enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds my life. The harvest season is here, with many farmers working on the fields and reaping the rewards of a successful crop. Although, farmers were pleased with the rewards, immediately they started preparing themselves for next year’s crops.

Blogging Successfully

As I continued to cycle through the Shire, I  felt that Mr. Creative Block was lagging behind and couldn’t keep up with the pace. I must admit there was a bit of a head wind. Mr. Creative Block decided that cycling and creativity were not for him. The thought of being in the outdoors with a variety of new surroundings including the: hills; beautiful trees and cows surrounded didn’t appeal to Mr. Creative Block.

Find your creativity

I continued with this steady pace. I cycled from village to village from farm to farm. Then realised those 10 miles past with ease.

I never plan a route ever. Cycling to me is as adventurous as life itself. We are on a journey. Where I live, there is a huge TV mast that can be seen from a 20 mile radius. The TV mast stands strongly on the top of a hill. This TV mast has been the main focal point of my journey and also the main focal point from my bedroom window.

I decided to take a break and sat down. After taking off my helmet, I wiped away some of the creative juice that was produced from the bike ride. I reached my pen and paper and wrote down many ideas that could be applied to my blog.

The creative flow from my mind illuminated the sheet of paper with bright ideas and concepts. Suddenly, I reached for my iPhone and started to dictate some of these ideas into my Dictaphone.

People are willing to help you

Moments later, a gentleman drove past in a luxurious car and asked: “Are you okay?”

My legs were placed in a figure four position. I was fine. Perhaps the kind gentleman was concerned that my bike could have been damaged or I may have twisted my ankle. However, I was reminded there are still people in the world that care.

I replied: “I’m fine thank you. I’m just taking a break.”

The kind gentleman waved and drove off into the hills. Mr. Creative Block disappeared. I forgot that he ever existed. I haven’t seen him for several days now.

I decided to turn back and cycle home. Luckily, the route back was downhill. Things are so easy the second time round. Ideas were flowing like the water from the clear streams, where you could see the fish and rocks on the riverbed. The sky had so much character. My imagination expanded as far as the eye could see, compared to the prison of my bedroom walls that frequently trapped my creativity.

Just like the birds and butterflies my creative thought was flying so freely.

The journey of cycling provided me with so many thoughts. This story was something I can compare to blogging and bloggers in general.

Never Give Up

For a blogger, it can be easy to give up at the first hurdle. Procrastination keeps us from achieving great rewards. Just like the farmer, they pay their dues and work hard to reap the rewards. The farmer continues to work hard on his or her goals and plants next year’s seeds.

Find your creativity

I struggle to find new ideas in a closed environment. A creative person must see and experience new things, in order to feed their creativity. A 20 mile bike ride was one of the most relaxing experiences mentally from me. Physically cycling can be as steady or as demanding as you choose. Just like blogging you can work at your own pace.

“Slow and steady wins the race”.

Blogging is the journey

I focused on cycling towards the TV mast. However, I didn’t know the route I was taking. In life, there are many ways to attain your goals. Sometimes you have to adjust your approach to meet those goals. I didn’t know what I’d face on the way. The same can be applied to blogging you’ll never know what you’ll find or learn.

Blogging is an adventure

You’ll meet some wonderful and creative people on your blogging journey. You’ll also develop some great new skills. The second time is always the easiest. Adventures are fun. Adventures can be scary. However, you’ll start a journey of self improvement that can be difficult to quit.

Blogging gets easier over time

After cycling a few miles the bike ride became much easier. I was getting more accustomed to the bike and the roads. Just like anything in life, after a few times it becomes easier. Anything that’s difficult is worth doing.

Blogging is about helping others

The kind gentleman didn’t have to ask if I needed help. It was the right thing to do. He was concerned. I was grateful somebody cared. To be successful as a blogger we must help others. Blogging is a great opportunity to develop a strong community and  focus on helping others.

Clear your mind and wave goodbye to Mr. Creative Block

Creativity is important for any: writer; blogger; designer; musician or artist. Inspiration provides creation.

Always carry a notebook

You never know when you’ll create an amazing idea. Thoughts are things. You can’t remember everything so use a notebook. It’s a great way to strengthen your mind.

Your thoughts please

Have you ever needed to clear your thoughts? How do you clear your mind?
